NAW in review

What a cracking National Apprenticeship Week we had last week! Teams around the business got involved with a range of activities, all to celebrate our apprentices’ achievements!

Eight of our apprentices put in a sterling performance at the Houses of Parliament last Wednesday, to show MPs and the media the importance of their role in the hospitality industry. Amid a range of activities, our Hobgoblin ‘what’s your pulling face?’ challenge stole the show, as MPs and journalists queued up to pull a pint for a selfie.

There was a special interview with General Manager Keith Fletcher from The Apple Cart too. Keith, a recently qualified advanced apprentice himself (in leadership and management), explained that more than half of his team members are apprentices and talked about how he’s seen their confidence and passion grow during the programme.

On top of this, we took the chance to remind people that they don’t need formal qualifications or experience to be an apprentice – just enthusiasm, a ‘can-do’ attitude and a desire to reach their full potential! It was brought to life with case studies from across the business too, as part of our #CareerGoals campaign. Christopher told us how he wants to ‘work his way up the ladder to become a high ranking chef’, Danni shared how she wants to become a Front of House Trainer and Sami went straight for the top: “I want to be Head Brewer!”

Several potential apprentices were among those who attended the Ten Lock Flight’s recruitment day in Runcorn too, less than a month before the pub opens its doors. And we also joined 30 other employers at Ounsdale High School’s careers fair, where Beer Company MD Richard Westwood is the Chair of Governors. HR Advisors Hannah and Clare talked to around 650 students, aged 14-18, about the attractions of becoming an apprentice at Marston’s. They explained more about the opportunities in both the pub and brewing sectors and showed videos of our apprentices at work to give students an insight what it’s like to work for Marston’s.

If you’ve got any stories from the week, we’d love to hear from you! Get in touch and send your pics to us at
